Spackle that Crackle

I am progressing quickly when it comes to fixing up the house!  Knock on Wood.

The bathroom is the worst room in house because a section of the wall is missing.  Plus, it's just as gross as the other rooms; if not worse.  And who, in there right mind would put a fan in the shower?   No worries though, I have a plan.

The big items have been removed from the house, and the name of the game lately has been Spackle!

Spackle, aka joint compound, is what I used to fill in the zillion little dings, nail holes, crevices, and other holes in the drywall.  The folk's that lived here prior loved to puncture that drywall, lemme tell ya!

Part of the trouble I ran into was seeing all the holes because the walls were so filthy and stained.  Priming the walls, with a stain blocker, helped that problem.

Specifically, the brand I used worked great.  The only thing I disliked about it was that it is an oil based solution, which means mineral spirits clean-up required.

I took all the old, nasty carpet out, but left the padding in tact.  This makes for easier clean up and helps to protect the floor from paint.  I primed as close to the edges as I could easily get with a roller.  The paint color I have in mind should work well with the small sections that did not get primed.

Did I mention I have a broken toe?  I accidentally dropped a boat motor on my big toe-- it happens.

The toe is healing nicely, but being on the ladder makes it hurt.  Mom came to the rescue!!!

She did a bunch of the painting between the wall and ceiling!

Mom piles most of the stuff we find in the house, outside by the road for people to take.  Some of the items we have found, we intend to sell.

I was soo happy to began feathering in the corners with the actual wall paint color!!!

In between layers of primer and paint, I work on the bathroom.  It too, had a zillion nails and screws that had to be removed.

The location of that fan bothers me, but it works.  I'm thinking after a good cleaning, it will be okay.

Jean, my daughter, helped me out this past Tuesday.  She likes to paint, but is a major germaphobe, like me.

I feel better when she is doing the ladder/brush work.   Don't let this girl near a roller with paint-- it's a disaster-- I speak from experience!

The biggest hole in the wall is just about on it's final coat of mud!  Tomorrow, I might get to sand this baby and admire my handiwork!!!

The wall color I chose was Antique White in and Eggshell finish.  If it were my house to live in it would have been a more vivid color.  However, I hear neutrals are the way to go when trying to sell a home. I once painted my bedroom neon green-- true story!

The neon green was a mistake though.  I mean it didn't keep me awake at night or anything, but it was supposed to be a mint green.  I got to do some spray painting, which I think is fun!  I took a wire brush to the rusty registers and to the old chandelier.  Then I gave them a clean and glossy look with the spray paint.

Each day I am so excited to make more progress on this house!!!  I am enjoying this job!

Pretty Primer

Ewww, Mom found teeth while cleaning the bathroom!!!

Great news-- the primer works!!!

It did an awesome job covering the stained ceiling & walls.

I'm still patching holes and sanding, but it's beginning to look a whole lot better.

Ceiling and walls in the front room are primed!  The house is beginning to smell better already!

The primer works great, but it's oil based and does not come off with soap n water.  Is bathing in kerosene bad for the skin?  JK

I'll accept my new, pretty, white, freckles.

The First Week

I closed on Tuesday and have worked on the house for three and half days now!  Each day, I came home completely exhausted and it felt great!

After the closing, Mom and I went to the house and found it still full of stuff.  We cleaned, and sorted.  That evening we went home, showered, and then went to the Hacienda for a celebration supper.

I decided speak Spanish for the rest of that evening.  I might know approx 4-5 Spanish words.  :-)

I ordered a wet burrito, and Mom ordered a HUGE combo plate!

Plus, there was CAKE!

It was actually a fund raiser supper for Mom's friend's anniversary celebration.  However, for Mom and I, we had our own reasons to celebrate too!

Thursday was the day I fixed the window!  I stopped by Menards to pick up some supplies.  FYI-- they do not cut glass there.

Sooo, I went to the local Ace Hardware store and got a sheet of glass cut to fit.  Ewww, that desk looks gross even in the pic:

Another project, was to install deadbolt locks and new handle locks on the front, back, and basement doors.

The window pane replacement went smoothly.  I removed all the old putty and glacier tips.

These little metal triangles are the glacier tips:

They help to hold the glass in place.  Then putty goes over them in order to weatherproof the frame and secure it in place.

I knew all those years of playing with Play Dough and Silly Putty would eventually pay off!!!  :-)

TaaaDaaaaa-- a nice, new, window pane!

Installing the deadbolt locks was a piece of cake, too!

I had help with it.

The disgustingly filthy door.

I got a new back door too.

The outside of the house really doesn't look so bad.

Mom stuck a FREE sign next to the pile of old blankets and stuff from the house.

Mom and I both thought the place looked much nicer without that sticky, stinky, carpeting.  I ripped and cut small section of carpet out at a time, that way I could carry the sections to the road for garbage pick-up.

I tried to clean the ceilings using a damp mop.

It only seemed to make the stains worse.  My hope is that the primer will take care of all the stains and won't let them bleed through.

We shall see on Monday if indeed it works!  Fingers Crossed!!!

Inside the Fixer Upper

Hey There!  Come on in!  WAIT!!!!  Ya might wanna take a deep breath of fresh air first!

The inside of the house is not so fresh-- that's putting it nicely.  The walls are filthy and ooze with unknown goo.

The bathroom is the worst room in the house.

I may need to look into a new tub surround.

Here's a pic of the kitchen floor:

I like the built-in cupboard.

The stove may be getting a new home.

I am sooo excited about transforming this house into someplace nice.

Top on the list is to install deadbolt locks and a sturdy back door.

The actual back door, still uses a skeleton key.

The bathroom ceiling:

The ceiling upstairs around the chimney:

The tenants left behind quite a bit of stuff.

The two bedrooms are as gross as the rest of the house.

I felt bad for the little girl that had to live here:

The windows look like they are in fairly decent shape, with the exception of one broken pane on the main level.

It appears the gutters could use a cleaning.  Luckily the roof is in good shape!

A stairwell that has wallpaper stapled up-- really?

How about that basement?

Lots of stuff down here.  What is in all those tubs?

Yay, the hot water heater is new!  Yay, the furnace is decent!

Umm, this water could be a prob:

I see a little masonry work is needed.

Sump pump is looking full.

The basement has sustained some long standing water damage.  Yuck.

Sheesh-- Why people-- why?

Not my best work, but it'll do for today's rain shower:

The walls in this house sure are banged up!

It looks like I may get to try painting the sink!  Or, I may just put in a new one.

The kitchen cupboards look better than I had expected.  Anyone wanna pickle?

The first day, right after closing, Mom and I picked up all kinds of trash!

We shoveled out the living room.

The basement door is short.

That's it for now!  I shall keep everyone posted of the progress.  Wish me luck!  ;-)
